this is the first beer festival i have been to where roping haybales was a form of entertainment. hooray beer!
4000 people drinking great beer on the last night of the summer
A lot of people seem to be fascinated by the fact that all the Lost Abbey Beers are cork-stoppered. We keep getting asked “is this beer?”
people mobbing us and loving the beer. hooray beer!
The only thing cool about this beer is the name. But the girls they hired to pour are pretty fun.
Breckenridge Brewery is right next to us and they’ve got a couple of really nice girls pouring 471 IPA, Summer and Vanilla Porter. (The Vanilla Porter, btw — very tasty.)
A couple of good beer festivals this weekend. 13th Annual San Diego Festival of Beer Tonight is the 13th Annual San Diego Festival of Beer in Downtown San Diego. The $25 admission fee gets you 10 tastes, and there’ll be 50 or so microbreweries on hand, so there’s plenty to choose from. Best of all, […]
Jr and spicy wings
Not my drink
the maker of America’s best beer right now is downing a secret blend Nah, that’s a lie. It’s a Mickey’s tall boy from the same gas station where Mojo gets burritos. Tomme loves the malt liquor. So the girls feed his habit. His only problem? “The beeches need to learn the difference between a quart […]
Yes, I finally got around to sucking all the photos off my camera and loading them to the web. As usual, the Port Brewing party was a hoot (and the food was great). Plus Tomme put Hop 15 on cask (wow!). Stone’s party was great too. Got to see a lot of fun people and […]
Me and Lona hanging out at the Stone Anniversary festival
The onion ring line (free onion rings!) is twice as long as any beer line. (Pretty much a toss up between Maui Brewing and Russian River).
I suppose if you spend your entire day deep frying onion rings while everyone else is off drinking good beer, you’d bee a little goofy too.
That’s Vinnie Cilurzo and a volunteer pour Blind Pig IPA. (More pics later)
Hey — we have signs! Tomme is very proud. We are pouring Hop 15 and a mystery beer everyone is calling Funk Barrel.
That’s Steve on the left (of Summer of Beer blog fame), and other Steve (who, as far as we know is not famous). The stopped by for breakfast and beer before heading out to the Stone Anniversary party
That’s a blow off barrel from yesterday’s High Tide fresh hopped IPA brewing. It is bubbling so hard the barrel shakes.
At the breakfast at Port. That’s a Pizza oven cooking bacon, chorizo, potatoes and ham – preety much everything but pizza!
Getting breakfast off to a good start with pulled pork sandwiches and beer!
Ken Schmidt warming up for a dat of beer with a burrito at Lost Abbey
seven beers to choose from… pick your favorite
some fresh hops made it, some didn’t. Long live the hop.
This time around it was Rick Lyke’s of Lyke 2 Drink turn to pick the subject for beer blogging Friday. A hat tip to him for making “The Brew Zoo” the topic. Molly and I just sent our oldest off to college at the University of Arizona a couple of week’s ago. The UA is […]
Saturday September 8th we’re heading out to Stone Brewing’s 11th Anniversary party. It’ll be our fourth time at the festival, and we always have a great time. There will be 39 breweries from as far away as Holland and Germany pouring beer that weekend, plus a lot of great food and fun people. It’s been […]
Does it get much better than this? A cold Hop 15 on a hot September 1st afternoon! The Stone glass is Sick is it not? Cheers, Tom and Wendy
A friend of Monday Night Brewery fancies himself a chef, and is using tonight as his first pass at combining beer with food. We’ll be drinking 2 beers: Lagunitas Maximus IPA with dinner and Rogue Shakespeare Stout with dessert. I’ll send a pic of the food too! Happy Labor Day, everyone!
Hanging out with G-Love and Trixie and having a pitcher of Carlsbad Chronic Pale Ale on a really hot afternoon in San Clemente
Tomme having some King Cobra and readying himself for the next Session blog post
Here’s a slideshow of last week’s barrel tasting event at Lost Abbey / Port Brewing:
That is Damian. He looks like Hootie from the Blowfish. He is braiding a girls hair while we have a beer at Port Brewing. He is also thinking of being the next senator from Idaho Hooray beer!
Titan IPA helping ring in the eve of the first college football Saturday of the Fall. Fight On for ol’ SC!
Ok, boys and girls, the live beer pix blog email line is open! Show us how you’re celebrating the end-of-summer weekend in living color. Email / SMS your beer pix to: pix @ mybeerpix.com For all the nitty gritty details on how you can blog live to our site, check out the previous post.
This weekend is Labor Day weekend – the traditional end of summer for those of us here in the States. Being who we are, we naturally like to celebrate the end of the season with (what else) Beer and pictures! But this time around we thought we’d do something really special and invite you to […]
Last Saturday was Lost Abbey’s first annual barrel tasting event, and as promised, it was a night of food, festivity and really fine beer. The sold out event began a little after 6pm as people filed into the brewery to sample a little Devotion and Red Barn as preparation for the main attractions. Once folks […]
what a mess. hundreds of glasses to clean. but everyone had a good time.
Vince and Tomme on the dock with Vince’s “Junkyard kitchen”. Amazing what these guys can do with some barley, barrels and a BBQ
Those a cinnamon roles that Vince made to pair with The Angel’s Share. Mmmmm!
That’s Steve (as in Steve of Summer of Beer fame) on the far right, a couple of lovely young ladies and yet another guy named Steve (or Stephen). W00t Steve!
All attendees got to bottle and cork their own Veritas
A sell-out crowd lines up to get in.
I am excited about the barrel tasting party tonight and the Lost Abbey. It’s the 1st one the brewery has put on and it’s sold out. Only 100 lucky people get to go and I’m one of them. I’ve trying to pick out my outfit for many days and it’s so hard but I think […]
As regular readers of our (irregularly updated) blog know, we’re all about the beer scene here in San Diego, California. More specifically, we’re all about the beer scene in Northern San Diego county, particularly along State Route 78 that we like to call “the beer highway”. Along a 12 mile stretch of road that runs […]
I’ve been to quite a few beer festivals, but I don’t think I’ll be attending any in Serbia any time soon. From the article: BELGRADE, Serbia (Reuters) — A 23-year old Serb was found dead and half-eaten in the bear cage of Belgrade Zoo at the weekend during the annual beer festival. The man was […]
Ran across this little snippet of news from beautiful, sunny and sandy Bahrian: TWO INDIAN men have been accused of operating an illegal “cottage industry” of brewing and selling alcohol. One is accused of setting up the brewery in his house and the other of obtaining, possessing and selling alcohol to customers and being an […]
Just a quick update to my earlier note on the Lost Abbey Barrel Tasting. The full press announcement is now on their website right here. And a link to the online tickets can be found right here.
Inside Bay Area’s William Brand had a little ditty over the weekend about the Toronado’s 2oth Anniversary party coming up this weekend. (warning: IBA’s layout is kinda hosed. If you can’t read it, there’s a mirror right here.) In the article there’s a few quotes from Toronado proprietor and beer demi-god David Keene (who also […]
“No fish, no fruit.” It’s a pretty straightforward policy — one that I held for many years and applied to both pizza and beer. (A personal Reinheitsgebot if you will.) It still holds for pizza, but over the years I’ve modified it for beer to allow certain fruits — sour apples, cherries, grapes are allowed, […]
Stop number three is Downtown Johnny Brown’s located in the civic center plaza just off third street. A good beer bar for local brews, but deserted on weekends. (Mostly a business crowd from the courthouse and civic center.) I’m drinking a Speedway Stout and Beer Sage is having Sculpin IPA from Ballast Point
Damian says this is a great beer bar. I hope he’s right. Our next stop
i’m having a Young’s chocolate stout and Lindeman’s framboise mixed. It tastes like a raspberry cheesecake
So the kids have gone off to ComicCon and we have an excuse to explore San Diego’s Gaslamp district in search of the perfect beer bar in downtown SD. Right now we’re having an Irish breakfast at Dublin Square just off 4th street. We’ll blog throughout the day and let you know what we find.
“Where the hell are you and why the hell aren’t you posting?” That’s the reader email that greeted me this morning –- 14 or so days since our last post to our beer and sun-soaked corner of the Internet. A two week hiatus isn’t so long in the grand scheme of things, but apparently its […]

We’re at San Diego Brewing Co. enjoying a few of their bbers.
This is the tap line up at San Diego Brewing

I know, our postings have been a little slow the past couple of weeks. I’ve been really busy with the summer rush here at the Mercantile, and Sage has a new contract with a security software company that’s kept him from doing much of anything other than… well, actually, I don’t know what it is […]
First off, kudos to Hop Talk for selecting “Atmosphere” as the subject for Session #5. If you read / look at this little blog more than a couple of times you’ll realize that Molly and I enjoy beer culture — people and places – as much as the beer itself. So “Atmosphere” is a topic […]
Last week I wrote about a 10 year-old bottle of Olde English 800 Malt Liquor Molly and I were about to open, sample — and hopefully survive. Well, after standing at our bar for several minutes staring at that 40 ounce bottle we decided that something as special as this had to be shared with […]
I’m late to the party on this one because I was out of town (and I’ve been drinking Olde English 800). Over at Seen Through a Glass Lew Bryson is mulling the meaning of the term “craft beer” and whether it applies Anheuser-Busch’s Beach Bum Blonde Ale. There’s a lot of back and forth in […]
