Last October, at the Great American Beer Festival, I ran into the head brewer of Schooner’s Grille & Brewery, Craig Cauwels. He was sandwiched between the busy booths of The Lost Abbey and Russian River. He makes an awesome oatmeal stout and other tasty beers. If you don’t believe me, check out his list of awards on their website (www.schoonersbrewery.com).
Anyway, he mentioned making a barrel aged sour beer, though he did not have any to taste at his booth. A few days later I was able to get my hands on a bottle and brought it back with me. Fast forward 4-months, and I brought it to a small get together. It was great beer and very well received. I would have liked to have a pic of my pint, but sharing 22oz with 10 plus people; everyone gets just a small taste.
It poured with very low carbonation, very dark with red highlights, mild sour nose, with soured cherry flavor. yummy. I look forward to trying another sour beer, or any beer for that matter, from Craig Cauwels and Schooner’s Grille & Brewery.
The Subtitle of that beer is: “Vinnie needs a vacation”
